ABSTRACT

Sorghum, [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench], is the fi fth most important cereal crop worldwide, widely grown in both temperate and tropical regions in Africa, Asia, Europe and America. Its renowned ability to withstand both heat and water-defi cit stresses make it a suitable crop for marginal environments, and it can be grown in an extremely diverse range of production systems, elevations, and seasons (FAOSTAT 2013; Singh and Lohithaswa 2006). Owing to sorghum’s long history of cultivation in many continents, sorghum breeders enjoy an extremely rich pool of genetic diversity to use in their improvement efforts.
