ABSTRACT

Middle aortic syndrome (MAS) (abdominal coarctation, mid-aortic dysplastic syndrome), first described in 1963,1 is an uncommon cause of arterial hypertension in children and young adults. It is characterized by segmental narrowing of the distal thoracic and/or abdominal aorta (Figure 54.1).2-7 It accounts for 0.5-2% of cases of coarctation of the aorta. Stenosis of the aorta may be associated with stenoses of aortic side branches, mostly renal and visceral arteries (Figure 54.2).
