ABSTRACT

Introduction Hypertensive heart disease (HHD) is a progressive condition in which the compensatory left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) that maintains cardiac output leads to myocardial remodelling. At some point in the evolution of this adaptation, the increase in LV mass ceases its positive compensatory function and becomes a potent marker of cardiovascular risk. Structural abnormalities in the myocardial wall accelerate the development of diastolic and systolic dysfunction, resulting in heart failure.
