ABSTRACT

Community-based nonprofit organizations fill the gap that is created when the for-profit sector and government systems do not adequately address community needs.

Grants are important to the welfare of many communities. Grants made to community-based organizations help these agencies improve the overall health, education, work skills, and earning power of people in the neighborhood. With greater purchasing power of its citizens, communitybased commerce is strengthened. Thus, local businesses as well as individuals profit from funds awarded to organizations charged with improving the community’s health, education, and welfare. However, as the number of community-based organizations increases, there is an increase in competition to secure the grant money needed to stimulate and support their work.
