ABSTRACT

Large quantities of liquid and solid wastes are produced by the food processing industry. The total amount of food wastes around the world is 1.3 billion tons each year. In the developed nations, 40% of the food waste is generated at the retail and consumer levels, while 40% of the food waste is generated at the production and processing stages in developing nations (Curry and Pillay, 2012). The total amount of food wastes and by-products produced in the European Union has been estimated at approximately 222 million tons/year (Mahro and Timm, 2007). The US EPA estimated that 230 million metric tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) were generated in 2007, of which 77.1 million
