ABSTRACT

The targets for renewable energy production to alleviate the global energy crisis and greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction under national and international schemes involve all major renewable energy sources (RESs). The challenge lies in the fact that the energy sector is the most responsible for GHG emissions (Olivier et al. 1999), while the demand for energy is projected to increase by 55% between 2005 and 2030 (IEA 2007). Replacing fossil energy (about 80% of the present world supply) with renewable sources including dedicated crops is expected to signicantly alleviate the double-faced problem in the energy sector. The general agreement on GHG reduction in the frame of the Kyoto
