ABSTRACT

According to Faraday’s law, when a conductor cuts magnetic ›eld lines, a voltage is induced across theconductor.Thesynchronousgeneratorusesthisphenomenontoproduceathree-phasevoltage. AsimpleschematicofthegeneratorisshowninFigure8.1andamoredetailedanalysisofthe machineisgiveninChapter12.Thegeneratorconsistsofanouterframecalledstatorandarotatingmagnetcalledrotor.Attheinnerperimeterofthestator,coilsareplacedinsideslots.Eachof the two slots separated by 180° houses a single coil (a-a′, b-b′, or c-c′). The coil is built by placingawireinsideaslotinonedirection(e.g.,a),andwindingitbackinsidetheoppositeslot(a′).In Figure 8.1, we have three coils; each is separated by 120° from the other coils.
