Unfortunately, the ideal waveform in Figure 13.1 does not exist in the real world. The nonlinearcharacteristicsofmostpowerequipmentandtheswitchingofloadstendtodistortthevoltage andcurrentwaveforms.Devicessuchastransformersandmotorscancausedistortionsduetothe saturationoftheirmagneticcores.Powerelectronicconverterscanalsocausedistortionsduetothe continuousswitchingoftheircomponentsasshowninChapter10.Cyclicloadswitching,suchas that in sawmills and rock crushing plants, can cause £ickers in voltage. Overloading distribution feeders can cause low voltage problems at customers’ sites.
