ABSTRACT

To automate and execute this process at high speed, the film in the camera is substituted by a linear arrangement of small individual photocells. Each of these photocells delivers an electrical signal that is proportional to the light intensity it sees and the time it has been exposed to it. The dimension of the object can be determined by electronically interrogating each of the individual photocells whether it had seen white or black. The number of photocells seeing white is a measure of the real width of the object.
