ABSTRACT

InthecontactwidthmeasuringsystemthatwasproposedjointlybyUnitedEngineeringandInternationalRollingMillConsultants[7],thecontactsphericalrollersareheldwitharmsthatarepivotally mountedonthesideguidesasshowninFig.17.7.Thesearmsaredrivenwithaircylindersandswingin theverticalplanearoundthesideguidestogetincontactwiththeslabedges.Lineardisplacementsensors areinstalledintheaircylindersandareusedtogeneratesignalsthatareproportionaltothevariationof theslabwidthwhiletheslabpassesbetweenthesideguides.Ifthepositionofthesideguidesisknown,the overallslabwidthcanbereadilycalculatedbyadataprocessingunit.
