ABSTRACT

To determine the optimal scroll method for an eye-gaze input system to browse Web pages, an empirical study was executed. Ten healthy undergraduate students participated in the experiment. Each participant executed a scroll-and-select task on the display consisted of two layers using an eye-tracking device. The task performance was compared between four scroll methods: a scroll-icon method and three auto-scroll methods. As a result, it was found that the improved auto-scroll method (quadratic and quadratic combination) with nonlinear relationship between the vertical scroll location and the scroll velocity was optimal from the viewpoints of the task completion time, the error rate and the subjective evaluation on usability.
