ABSTRACT

In the study of chaotic dynamics one often encounters sets on the real line, in the plane, or in space that have very complicated and interesting structures. In Section 2.4 we discussed two such sets in the interval [0, 1]: the Cantor (ternary) set, and the set of numbers in the interval [0, 1] whose iterates under Qµ remain in [0, 1] for a given µ > 4. In Chapters 5-7 we will discuss several different kinds of complicated sets, many of which can be realized only with the help of a computer.
