Bariatric surgery is an effective treatment for severe obesity. The amount of weight loss and the resolution of comorbid conditions associated with surgical weight loss surpass those of nonsurgical approaches to obesity, leading to an increasing number of bariatric procedures. Approximately 220,000 bariatric surgeries were performed in 2009, a 10-fold increase from 1990.1 Suboptimal weight loss and weight regain are becoming more of a clinical concern as the number of bariatric procedures continues to rise.
