ABSTRACT

ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY OF THE CEREBRAL CIRCULATION The brain is supplied by an extensive interconnected network of arterial circulation. Each cerebral hemisphere receives blood flow from the ipsilateral internal carotid artery that branches into the middle cerebral artery over the lateral surface of the brain and the anterior cerebral artery over the medial surface of the brain. The brain stem and cerebellum receive blood flow from the vertebral and basilar arteries, which terminate in the posterior cerebral

arteries that feed the posterior portions of the cerebral hemisphere including the occipital and posterior parietal lobes and the thalamus.
