ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION Syncope is a sudden transient loss of consciousness (TLOC) and postural tone with rapid and spontaneous recovery. Transient cerebral hypoperfusion results in syncope. The elderly are most vulnerable because of age-associated physiological changes in heart rate and blood pressure regulation, comorbid hypertension and atherosclerosis, reduction in thirst, autonomic dysfunction, and the concurrent use of medications that affect blood pressure regulation.
