ABSTRACT

The historic announcement of the Loeb and Sourirajan asymmetric membrane in the 1960s is generally acknowledged as the major scientic breakthrough in the eld of membrane science and technology. Over a half century has passed since the concept rst emerged. Today, ltration separation using membrane-based technology has been successfully adopted in various industrial elds around the world, such as seawater desalination, municipal/industrial wastewater treatment, food and beverage industry, and pharmaceutical industry. In these industrial processes, membrane technology offers many distinct advantages over the conventional treatment methods.
