ABSTRACT

For a compression member that fails by yielding, Pn = Fy Ag, similar to a tensile member. However, the steel columns are leaner; that is, the length dimension is much larger than the cross-sectional dimension. Accordingly, the compression capacity is more often controlled by the rigidity of the column against buckling instead of yielding. There are two common modes of failure in this respect.
