ABSTRACT
There are four mechanisms by which a toxicant may pass through a cell membrane; the most important of them is passive diffusion through the membrane. The others are fi ltration through the membrane pores, carrier-mediated transport, and engulfi ng by the cell. The last two mechanisms are different in that the cell takes an active part in the transfer of a toxicant across its membranes.
