ABSTRACT

It has long been observed that certain metabolic disorders tend to cluster together in individuals. As a matter of fact, independent scientists have reported an association between hypertension, hyperglycemia, and gout as early as the 1920s (Kylin 1923). Almost 30 years later, the role of gender differentiation on visceral obesity made its rst appearance on the medical literature (Vague 1947), opening way for our understanding of the role of obesity on triglycerides and hypertension (Albrink et al. 1980) and insulin resistance (Reaven 1988). Reaven (1988) coined the term Syndrome X to describe the association between resistance to insulin-mediated glucose uptake, hypertension, type 2 diabetes (T2D), and cardiovascular disease (CVD).
