ABSTRACT

It is generally agreed that human milk is the preferred feeding for preterm infants because of its many protective and other beneficial effects. It is also widely appreciated that the nutrients provided by human milk do not meet the high needs of preterm infants.1, 2 Nutrient supplementation (fortification) of human milk is therefore necessary. Fortification raises the concentration of specific nutrients to levels where infant needs are met whenever energy needs are satisfied. Fortification also increases the caloric density of milk.
