ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: In this article an attempt is made to analyze and present alternative long term scenarios for urban growth in the Athens metropolitan region. The scenarios are partially based on the concept of sustainable metabolism and focus on the form the city can take in year 2050. The methodology used is relatively coarse because of the lack of data. Four different scenarios are estimated, one assuming that existing trends will continue, another that foresees increased densities to minimize energy consumed in transportation and finally another two that account for the lack of green space in many areas.
