ABSTRACT

Wastewater could contain a large range of pharmaceuticals (Richardson, 2012), among which antibiotics are of special interest because they could potentially interfere with the process of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). They are essential for medicinal activities and to preserve health. However, their properties could also imply undesired effects when they are present in wastewater, treated water, or even surface and ground water, or drinking water (Delgado et al., 2012). Thus, depending on their use, antibiotics are released in either urban, industrial, farming, or hospital wastewaters (Figure 8.1).
