ABSTRACT

This chapter establishes the relationships for shock waves that occur in supersonic ¡ow. First, the propagation of in‡nitesimal internal waves is studied, which establishes the speed of sound. It is then shown how this acoustical result is modi‡ed in the case of ‡nite-amplitude disturbances. That is, it is shown how nonlinear effects grow to cause a shock wave to form. The remainder of the chapter is devoted to the study of steady ¡ows involving standing shock waves.
