ABSTRACT
In many physical situations, a dependent variable is a function of two independent variables. This type of relationship is expressed as a surface in
a three dimensional coordinate system. To determine the rate of change of z as x and y vary, we hold one variable constant and differentiate with respect to the other. This is called partial differentiation.
