ABSTRACT

According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES 2009-2010), about a third of United States adults are classied as obese [1]. These individuals have a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30. The goal of this chapter is to review the current medical interventions for obesity management. Numerous books have been published on this topic alone. This brief chapter seeks to offer esoteric strategies for the clinician who is evaluating and treating patients with obesity. First, dietary interventions will be reviewed, followed by a discussion of the role of physical activity in weight management. Then, adjunct therapies including behavior modication and pharmacological interventions will be discussed. Finally, a summary of how to apply these therapies in a clinical setting will be provided.
