Chitosan and Chitosan Derivatives for Mucosal Delivery of Biopharmaceutical Drugs

Biopharmaceutical medicines are increasingly becoming promising tools for modern therapeutics. This new class of therapeutics is quite heterogeneous and includes different molecules such as proteins, peptides, vaccines, and nucleic acids, among others, with use in virtually all therapeutic elds (e.g., cancer and infectious diseases treatment, vaccination, and metabolic dysfunctions) and diagnostics. Since at the moment most of biopharmaceuticals are only active after parenteral administration, methods to develop successful delivery systems that may explore the mucosal pathway to exert local effect or enter into the bloodstream are emerging.
