Furthermore, fragments tend to become dominated, both in terms of species richness and individual abundance, by pioneer trees [8], [19]. Because tropical pioneer trees usually share a similar set of life-history traits irrespective of their taxonomic a nities [20]–[22], this biased ratio of pioneers to shade-tolerant plants may reduce the functional diversity of tree assemblages in fragments.
