ABSTRACT

Introduction Predation is a powerful agent in the ecology and evolution of predator and prey. Prey may select multiple habitats whereby dierent genotypes prefer dierent habitats. If the predator is also habitat-specic the prey may evolve dierent habitat occupancy. Drastic changes can occur in the relation of the predator to the evolved prey. For example the predator may exterminate the prey in the habitat available to the predator and thus lose its prey. e prey selecting the alternative habitat may be released from predation and might even evolve to become a new species free of predation. e stronger the predation and more ecient the predator, the more drastic would be the evolutionary changes. It is, therefore, important to study the way predation acts on genes in species that select multiple habitats by genotype.
