ABSTRACT

The structure and the elementary operating principle of semiconductor lasers have been introduced in Chapter 1. The basic semiconductor physics and principles of the semiconductor p-n junction, essential for understanding the operation of lasers, are discussed in Chapter  2. Following the discussion in Chapter 3 regarding the modication of band structure by alloying, or by using strained or unstrained quantum nanostructures, the band structure calculation using the k.p method has been introduced in Chapter 4. The role of passive optical devices in lasers is mentioned in Chapter 5. The optical processes occurring in semiconductors are discussed in Chapter 6.
