ABSTRACT

The formation of bands in a periodic crystalline solid was discussed qualitatively in Chapter 2. It was also mentioned that the calculation of the band structure in semiconductors involves the solution of the one-electron Schrödinger equation in the presence of a periodic potential. Most textbooks on solid-state physics and semiconductors discuss the Kronig-Penney model, the nearly free-electron model, or the tight binding model to illustrate the formation of bands in crystals. The band structure is described by the E-k diagram, and a brief introduction to the diagram has been given in Chapter 2.
