ABSTRACT

The area of staf‘ng is complex for the occupational safety manager. The roles of safety and staf‘ng are complex because of the varying characteristics of the workforce. First, you have the entire staff of an organization (with differing skill sets and levels of understanding) as well as temporary and contract employees to consider in terms of occupation safety management. Each of these groups will require differing levels of understanding and guidance in creating the optimal safety environment for an organization. Temporary workers are employed in some of the most hazardous jobs, including waste recycling, ‘sh processing, and construction. With little information about the nature of their jobs and an absence of safety training, workers report retaliation for health and safety complaints along with an increased risk of work-related injuries and illnesses (Freeman and Gonos, 2011).
