ABSTRACT

On the morning of August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall at Grand Isle, LA. Wind speeds were measured at 200 km/h (125 mph, a strong category 3), with gusts up to 224 km/h (140 mph). Rainfall exceeded 19-24 cm (8-10 in.) along much of the hurricane’s path, causing extensive ooding. Katrina also spawned tornadoes, causing further damage. At least 1833 people died in the hurricane and subsequent ooding. Total property damage is estimated at $81 billion (2005 USD).
