ABSTRACT
Before examining networks in society, we must first understand the
nature of networks themselves. Graphs and networks occur in many
different contexts, so their properties underlie features that are seen
in all the systems where they occur. In this chapter we introduce
some of these properties and show how they manifest themselves
in social systems. We also introduce some of the tools that can be
used to study social networks.
