ABSTRACT
An important element in the history of the solution of Enigma is that the Luftwaffe Enigma was solved more easily by GC&CS than the naval Enigma, though until 1 February 1942 both used the identical machine with identically wired rotors. One reason is that the air force (like the army) chose the three rotors inserted into its machines from a set of five rotors while the navy chose its three from a set of eight.
