ABSTRACT
Vatican codes were regularly broken during World War II by American and British cryptanalysts, a document1 released into the National Archives reveals. It shows that, when engaged in total war, even the powers that honored religion stopped at almost nothing, not even at prying into matters spiritual. To them, as to the Germans who also broke into Vatican messages,2 there was nothing sacred.
