ABSTRACT

History A 75-year-old Nigerian man is admitted to hospital with a history of increasing confusion. This has been progressively worsening over the last few months. His daughter has become increasingly concerned that he is not able to cope at home. He has a past medical history of hypertension, cataract surgery and has been told he has a leaky heart valve. His current medication includes amlodipine 5 mg/day and atorvastatin 10 mg/day. He has no allergies. He lives alone in a first floor flat and is normally independent in all activities of daily living. He grew up in Nigeria and moved to the UK ten years ago when his wife died. He is a non-smoker and drinks a measure of whisky every night.
