ABSTRACT

A 25-year-old man has presented to his GP with a one-month history of a generalized rash and pruritis. This rash started on the trunk and has spread to all four limbs, neck and scalp. It is associated with malaise, recurrent fevers and sweatiness. There are no mucosal ulcers or eye disorders. He does not recall any recent sore throat or flu-like illness. There is no drug or travel history and he has no history of skin disorders. He works as a teacher and was fit and well prior to his present condition. However, he does have a one-year history of back pain in the lumbar area and left knee pain, and as a result he has been unable to play football regularly.
