Infectious diseases contracted during pregnancy can have a serious impact on both the mother and the fetus. Some infections

cause congenital abnormalities in the fetus (rubella, syphilis, toxoplasmosis, cytomegalovirus, chickenpox). Other infections can

be transmitted from mother to baby during pregnancy (parvovirus) or around the time of delivery (human immunodefi ciency

virus (HIV), hepatitis B, hepatitis C, herpes, group B streptococcus).
