The utility of blood culture in the diagnosis of early onset neonatal pneumonia was shown by Webber et al.,34
who found that 46 percent of infants had positive blood cultures, although the rate was less (17 percent) for infants with late-onset pneumonia. These rates compare favorably with the less than 16 percent blood culture positive rate found in adults with community-acquired pneumonia.6
