ABSTRACT

Electricity has been used as an alternate energy source for melting aluminum scrap for some time. The rst electric furnace for melting scrap was installed in the United States in 1918 (Anderson, 1987) and appeared in Europe soon afterward. These furnaces have been in use ever since and have evolved over time. The most important innovation was the introduction of induction furnaces for melting in the 1930s. These have largely displaced the resistance and arc furnaces originally used.
