ABSTRACT

Ethernet is today essentially the only wired LAN standard, and it was the first widely used LAN technology. It is simpler to manage and cheaper than token ring or ATM. For example, a gigabit NIC sells for about $12 and a 5-port gigabit switch can be bought for approximately $15. The speed ranges from about 1 Mbps to 100 Gbps. As indicated, the Ethernet continues to march forward. It has been in development for more than 40 years. The chronological development of Ethernet technology is outlined in Table 7.1 which references numerous acronyms and organizations that will be identified as they are discussed in more detail in this and subsequent chapters.
