5.1.1 Biosensor Concept

The term “biosensor” was introduced by Cammann in 1977 [1]. A stricter denition of the term was set later by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) [2,3]: a biosensor is dened as “a self-contained integrated device that is capable of providing specic quantitative or semiquantitative analytical information using a biological recognition element (biochemical receptor) which is in direct spatial contact with a transduction element.”
