ABSTRACT

The history of forensic entomology in Poland begins in the nineteenth century. The rst published information on necrophilous fauna and their role in the process of carrion decomposition was in 1889. A Lvov professor, Leopold Wajgel, in his article entitled O faunie grobów ludzkich (“On the fauna of human graves”), presented research conducted by the German medical doctor Hermann Reinhard and the French pathologist Jean-Pierre Mégnin and emphasized the need for further studies on entomofauna of graves and its application in medicolegal investigations (Wajgel 1889). However, the true pioneers of forensic entomology in Poland were two medical examiners from the Institute of Forensic Medicine at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow, Stefan von Horoszkiewicz and Eduard von Niezabitowski, who published the rst case report and experimental studies on insects attracted to carrion (Von Horoszkiewicz 1902; Von Niezabitowski 1902).
