25.1 INTRODUCTION

Engineering can be dened as the creative application of scientic principles in the design and development of structures, machines, apparatus, or manufacturing processes to improve or develop intended functions that make tasks more efcient, safe, or practical. As applied to forensic entomology, it can mean the correct choice of measurement instruments, or the development and design of new ones. It can also be development of computer programs, computer apps, and/or creative applications of behavioral sciences. This chapter focuses on tools and devices for measuring climatic, weather, soil, and volatile data at the scene of the forensic entomologist’s investigation. The potential for future engineering solutions applied to forensic entomological investigations is also explored.
