ABSTRACT

Plant carbohydrates can be broadly classied into mono-, di-, oligo-, and polysaccharides. Glucose, fructose, galactose, and ribose are the most preponderant monosaccharides in the plant kingdom. Sucrose, maltose, and melibiose are the important disaccharides present in several plants and they undergo hydrolysis into monosaccharides depending on the energy needs based on various metabolic activities (aranathan et al. 1987).
