ABSTRACT

Dietary bers (DFs) have to be part of a balanced diet and most recommendations are to consume 25-30 g DF per day. is gure (which is pretty high and larger than what is consumed in most Western countries) is based on epidemiological studies that associate a lack of DF to an increased risk of colon cancer as well as several gastrointestinal diseases such as constipation or diverticulosis. e recommendation is oen associated with more concrete advices such as “eat ve portions of fruits and vegetable a day” and “eat more whole meal cereal products and grain legumes.” ese foods contain diverse types of DF that are soluble or insoluble, small or high degree of polymerization, and have dierent physicochemical properties and, consequently, diverse physiological impacts.
