ABSTRACT

Children represent the next generation of information and communications technology (ICT) users. There is a general feeling that young people have a natural affinity for computers and wish to spend as much time as possible using them. A survey was carried out among a sample of young users between the ages of 5 and 17 to elicit their understanding and views on different kinds of new technology such as computers, email, the Internet and mobile phones. This paper reports the results of the survey, which provides some insights into how children view technology, the practical problems they envisage with certain new developments, and the benefits and drawbacks of using ICT compared with traditional means of communication.
