ABSTRACT

The Internet is the world’s largest public access information database. It consists of millions of pages, theoretically accessible to all. In practice, however, many sites are not well designed and cannot be accessed easily and effectively by those who wish to use them. Various sectors of society can be expected to encounter difficulties; the elderly, novice computer users, the colour blind and those with disabilities to name but a few examples. The cultural stereotype, particularly of disabled and older people is that they do not wish to use the Internet, or are not capable of so-doing. This is not the case, but it is important that interface design takes into account their needs in order that they are not excluded.
