Simoco Digital Systems design and build complete TErrestrial Trunked RAdio (TETRA) systems and has developed a TETRA handset for use by Police forces throughout the UK. In order that design specifications could be confirmed prior to the initiation of new tooling for production and an initial request was made for user centred evaluations of a prototype handset. An initial review of the handset was made by experts in mobile communications, user interface design and 'context of use' analysis. This was followed by more specific focus group exercises with a number of Police authorities from around the UK. This paper summarises the findings of both activities which are then discussed from a methodological standpoint in terms of the points that were generated by the different groups, and in relation to the scope of the proj ect.
