8.1 INTRODUCTION

Creation and investigation of materials with the gradient of properties is considered one of the main directions of polymer science for the 21st century. In this direction, the essential success was achieved in the 1970s of the previous century. The methods of obtaining materials with inhomogeneous distributions of properties were developed. The heterogeneity of composition conditions the gradient of refraction. In such an area a trajectory of the light beam is constantly curvilinear along the free path length, which causes deviation of light beam, and during proper distribution of refraction index focusing of beams, too. In the 1970s, the cylinder elements were fabricated from polymers with radial parabolic distribution of composition, having the ability of transmission of light and focusing. These elements received the name Selfoc (Self focusing).
